Modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) are often held back from reaching their full potential by fragmented corporate structures. The root cause frequently lies in infrastructure – specifically, the underestimated interplay between AI and cloud computing. This insight comes from Kiran Minnasandram, Vice President of Technology Transformation & Advisory Group at Wipro.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Wipro\u2019s latest Pulse of Cloud Report<\/em><\/a>, only 14 percent of surveyed companies in Germany pursue a comprehensive Industry Cloud<\/em> strategy. This fragmentation carries over directly into AI applications built on such infrastructures, ultimately preventing both technologies from achieving peak performance.<\/p>\n

Invest in Cloud or AI?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Technology budgets within organizations are often fiercely contested, forcing decision-makers to weigh the benefits of one investment against another. However, with cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI), success often lies precisely in their combination – because the performance of these two technologies is deeply intertwined: AI performs best when running on a scalable, interoperable cloud environment.<\/p>\n

In turn, cloud environments can be significantly enhanced through automation, seamless real-time data analytics, and powerful computing resources – meaning improvements in one technology inherently strengthen the other. Therefore, the question shouldn\u2019t be \u201ceither\u2026or\u2026\u201d but rather how to align both within a unified technology strategy.<\/p>\n

In many cases, inefficiencies don\u2019t stem from the software itself but from its fragmented deployment. Wipro\u2019s survey of 500 executives across North America, the UK, Germany, France, and Switzerland found that cloud solutions are already in use at 76 percent of companies, while AI adoption stands at 54 percent. However, when examining which organizations follow a company-wide, unified cloud strategy, the number drops dramatically – to just 10 percent overall among companies in IT, finance, and manufacturing. In Germany, it\u2019s slightly higher at 14 percent, or roughly one in seven.<\/p>\n

As a result, significant potential remains unrecognized or undervalued. Inefficiencies arise precisely where advanced technologies should eliminate them. Fragmented approaches also hinder flexible scaling, data integration, and security. Depending on business requirements, addressing these challenges through a unified Industry Cloud<\/em> solution – rather than a generic one – can therefore be highly advantageous.<\/p>\n

When an Industry Cloud Makes Sense<\/h2>\n

Beyond the well-known benefits of cloud-based infrastructure, so-called Industry Cloud<\/em> solutions address sector-specific challenges by deploying tailored systems. These can simplify compliance with industry-specific regulations and, depending on configuration, offer advanced analytical capabilities. Because of these intersections, the decision to implement an Industry Cloud has evolved from a purely technological consideration into a strategic business imperative.<\/p>\n

Looking across industries, heavily regulated sectors stand out: financial services must comply with standards like PCI DSS for credit card transactions or SOX for financial reporting; healthcare must adhere to HIPAA and GDPR for patient data protection; and manufacturing often demands highly customizable infrastructure. In these contexts, Industry Cloud solutions typically come pre-configured with controls, certifications, and audit features tailored to specific regulations – significantly simplifying compliance, reducing risk, and lowering internal maintenance costs.<\/p>\n

Many sectors have unique operational processes, data structures, and analytical needs. Industry Cloud platforms often include pre-built applications, workflows, data models, APIs, and analytics tools specifically designed for these vertical requirements – for example, patient management in healthcare, claims processing in insurance, or supply chain optimization in manufacturing.<\/p>\n

Smooth data migration and robust security measures top the list of concerns that may deter companies from adopting cloud – or Industry Cloud<\/em> – solutions. Yet once implemented, a well-designed combination of cloud and AI applications actually enhances security and simplifies regulatory compliance – thanks to seamless access to necessary data and the resulting confidence in being fully compliant.<\/p>\n

To get there, a phased approach can help control risks and ensure a smooth transition to the cloud. Additionally, for greater agility, organizations can combine on-premises architectures with modular, customizable cloud solutions.<\/p>\n

Industry Cloud platforms inherently deliver high security standards through AI-driven monitoring for suspicious behavior patterns and security controls specifically attuned to sector-specific cyber threats. However, this must be complemented by solid, enterprise-wide AI governance frameworks to ensure transparency and compliance. Moreover, a robust cloud strategy isn\u2019t a one-time checkbox – it requires a mindset of continuous optimization and learning to secure long-term project success.<\/p>\n

Companies considering an Industry Cloud implementation should evaluate this option early to allow sufficient lead time for maturing the technology to its fullest potential. Here too, it\u2019s advisable not to go it alone: building an Industry Cloud ecosystem – by engaging partners, startups, and even collaborating with regulators – can significantly increase chances of success.<\/p>\n
