In it, he raised questions about how the company treated its community and the relationship between growth, money, and sustainability. Most of the core developers left with him. In June 2016, he founded <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/about\/\">Nextcloud<\/a> together with Niels Mache and a dozen experienced open-source entrepreneurs and engineers.<\/p>\n<p>The move was risky. Karlitschek had started the ownCloud project in 2010 and released its first version. In 2011, he co-founded ownCloud Inc. Now he was giving up the well-known name and starting over with a new brand.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, he describes the situation at the time like this: &#8220;In 2016, the big tech corporations dominated the market for collaboration software.&#8221; Data protection, he says, <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/de\/blog\/press_releases\/nextcloud-hub-26-spring-neues-office-eine-schlankere-benutzeroberflache-und-ein-neues-governance-tool\/\">played only a minor role<\/a> at the time. &#8220;Nextcloud was our answer to that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ten years later, this has grown into a company headquartered in Stuttgart. Its software runs in ministries, universities, and at Deutsche Telekom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is digital sovereignty?<\/strong> Digital sovereignty describes the ability of organizations and states to decide for themselves over their data and the technologies they use. It comes under pressure when laws such as the US CLOUD Act allow foreign authorities access to data, even in European data centers. Open-source software, European operators, and independent security certifications are seen as building blocks for retaining this control.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">A Topic for Nerds<\/h2>\n<p>Karlitschek comes from the open-source world. Since the late 1990s, he has been involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/karlitschek.de\/\">KDE projects<\/a>, a major free desktop environment for Linux. Karlitschek points to several moments that accelerated interest in open source: the Snowden revelations, the debates around GDPR, certain regulatory requirements, and the current geopolitical situation. What was once a question for a handful of idealists became a question for IT leaders, data protection officers, and governments.<\/p>\n<p>Nextcloud&#8217;s core principle, meanwhile, has stayed the same. &#8220;Since Nextcloud began ten years ago, our core principle has always been clear,&#8221; Karlitschek said in February, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heise.de\/news\/Nextcloud-Hub-26-Winter-erweitert-Federation-und-optimierte-Performance-11185994.html\">heise online<\/a>. &#8220;Organizations and individuals retain control over their data, instead of switching to an ecosystem controlled by a vendor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Profitable from Year One<\/h2>\n<p>Nextcloud raised no venture capital, a path that has become rare in the software industry. It financed its growth from its own business. According to the vendor, Nextcloud was already profitable by the end of 2016, the year it was founded.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2017, the team had grown to 35 employees, nearly tripling in size. In 2019, the company achieved a major breakthrough in the public sector. According to the vendor, the French government and Germany&#8217;s federal administration rolled out Nextcloud for their staff. Order intake and the customer base both doubled that same year.<\/p>\n<p>By December 2023, Nextcloud had 100 team members from over 20 countries, with offices in Berlin and Stuttgart. That same month, the email project Roundcube joined the company.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">The Complaint Against Microsoft<\/h2>\n<p>Karlitschek also seeks political confrontation. In 2021, a coalition of 30 companies and civil society organizations led by Nextcloud filed a complaint with the European Commission. The accusation was gatekeeping by Microsoft. That means a dominant provider restricting access for competitors, for instance by tightly coupling its own services. At the core was the bundling of OneDrive with Windows.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the proceedings ran quietly. According to Karlitschek, Nextcloud filed the complaint back in April 2021. When months passed with barely any response from the Commission, the company filed a second complaint with the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) and made the matter public in late November 2021. The goal was to increase the pressure, Karlitschek told the British IT outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/12\/02\/nextcloud_onedrive_interview\/\">The Register<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission took its time. There had been no noticeable progress since the filing, Nextcloud wrote in October 2025. Citing the Commission&#8217;s lack of interest, the lengthy process, and its own costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/blog\/nextcloud-decided-to-withdraw-complaint-against-microsoft\/\">the company withdrew the complaint<\/a>. A Commission spokesperson acknowledged the withdrawal, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2025\/10\/09\/nextcloud_withdraws_ec_onedrive_bundling\/\">The Register<\/a>, noting that Nextcloud is continuing to pursue the matter with the Bundeskartellamt.<\/p>\n<p>At the Bundeskartellamt, the case is still ongoing. Back in late September 2024, the authority had already classified Microsoft as a company of paramount significance for competition across markets. This triggers expanded abuse oversight for five years. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/de\/blog\/press_releases\/nach-beschwerde-von-nextcloud-bundeskartellamt-leitet-naechsten-schritt-gegen-microsoft-ein\/\">statement<\/a>, Karlitschek called it an important step toward being able to prohibit anti-competitive practices by the US corporation in the future. Nextcloud had submitted documents and evidence over the course of three years. No decision by the authority on the OneDrive bundling has been made public so far.<\/p>\n<p>A central issue for Karlitschek is the US CLOUD Act. Under certain conditions, the law grants US authorities access to data stored by US providers. It explicitly applies to European data centers and subsidiaries as well. A server location in Frankfurt, therefore, does not automatically protect data from access out of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, Karlitschek cites Microsoft&#8217;s Delos model. There, the operator belongs to SAP, while Microsoft supplies the software. Karlitschek sees this as an attempted solution with a weak spot: updates and security patches still come from Microsoft. The dependency remains.<\/p>\n<p>All the more reason he welcomes the EU Commission&#8217;s Tech Sovereignty Package. &#8220;I think the proposals are great. Honestly, I was surprised they listened so closely,&#8221; he told Computerwoche. &#8220;The real challenge now is actually implementing the proposals.&#8221; The draft envisions four risk levels. At the highest level, only open-source and European solutions count. However, in Karlitschek&#8217;s estimation, this level affects &#8220;only one percent of the market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Demand from around the world<\/h2>\n<p>Since Donald Trump&#8217;s second term began in 2025, Nextcloud has felt a markedly higher demand for European solutions. Incoming inquiries tripled in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/blog\/press_releases\/sovereign-workspace-momentum\/\">vendor figures<\/a>. Most came from Germany, followed closely by France, just ahead of the US. The shift toward sovereign solutions is not confined to Europe, he says. It is a global development.<\/p>\n<p>The partner network grew by almost 300 percent in 2025, according to vendor figures.<\/p>\n<p>Karlitschek remains level-headed about it. &#8220;The interest is enormous,&#8221; he said at the Nextcloud Summit in Munich in June. But many organizations first explore their options before taking action, he added. He sees the strongest growth coming from defense, education, and regulated sectors such as healthcare and finance.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Ministries as Customers<\/h2>\n<p>The public sector shows just how large these projects can get. France&#8217;s Ministry of National Education is currently rolling out Nextcloud. It already runs 400,000 employee accounts, with a target of 1.2 million. The Dutch IT cooperative for education and research SURF brought Nextcloud into production for 100,000 users in 2025. Austria&#8217;s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism launched the same year with 1,200 users.<\/p>\n<p>Projects of this scale demand patience. According to Nextcloud, a typical sales cycle takes several months &#8211; in the public sector, sometimes years. That&#8217;s why the company doesn&#8217;t expect many of its recently launched projects to reach full rollout until 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Nextcloud Files received <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/blog\/press_releases\/nextcloud-security-recognized-with-anssi-cspn-and-bsi-it-grundschutz\/\">CSPN certification<\/a> from ANSSI, France&#8217;s cybersecurity agency. According to Nextcloud, the auditors found no vulnerabilities in the preceding vulnerability and penetration tests. In Germany, public IT service provider Dataport hosts a Nextcloud instance in an environment certified under BSI IT-Grundschutz. The instance itself, however, is not part of the certification scope.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Partners and a Euro Office<\/h2>\n<p>Nextcloud is growing through partners. Cloud provider IONOS launched a Nextcloud Workspace on its platform in 2025. Swedish systems integrator Redpill Linpro brought a similar offering to the Nordic countries. Partners in the Netherlands and France have joined as well, including Dutch telecom group KPN.<\/p>\n<p>Nextcloud&#8217;s partnership with IONOS also extends to the Euro Office, a jointly developed office suite. In mid-September, Nextcloud announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/blog\/nextcloud-hub26-summer\/\">desktop client<\/a> for it. IONOS manager Patrick Schaudel frames the project as a response to the need for an independent European office solution that can hold its own against established providers.<\/p>\n<p>For Karlitschek, this is about more than just where data is stored. &#8220;Freedom of choice is a core part of digital sovereignty,&#8221; he said <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/de\/blog\/press_releases\/nextcloud-hub-26-summer-euro-office-fuer-den-desktop\/\">at the desktop app&#8217;s launch<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just about where data resides, but also which tools are available &#8211; and that users can make that decision for themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Europe Can&#8217;t Wait<\/h2>\n<p>In November 2025, Nextcloud raised the stakes further. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcloud.com\/blog\/press_releases\/sovereignty-2030-nextcloud-invests-over-e250-million-in-digital-sovereignty\/\">Sovereignty 2030<\/a> program, the company announced investments of more than 250 million euros through 2030. The money is earmarked for research and development, new products, partners, education, and community projects. The global workforce is set to grow sevenfold within five years. For now, this remains an announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Karlitschek justified the move with a line aimed at the entire European economy: &#8220;Europe can&#8217;t wait.&#8221; Political decisions take time, he said. That&#8217;s why private industry on the ground needs to drive economic independence from the bottom up. &#8220;This is why we decided to take the lead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Ten Years After the Relaunch<\/h2>\n<p>In mid-September, the Nextcloud community celebrated at the CIC Berlin. He put the growth of recent years at 50 to 60 percent per year. At Deutsche Telekom, more than three million people use MagentaCloud, which is built on Nextcloud, every day. Karlitschek admitted he was a little surprised himself: &#8220;Sometimes I ask myself how we can be the champion with just 170 people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the answer lies in decisions that looked risky back in 2016: the relaunch under an unknown name, the refusal to take venture capital, and the open dispute with Microsoft. Whether the growth holds will become clear with the major rollouts that Nextcloud itself expects only for 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n<p>For IT decision-makers, there&#8217;s a practical lesson in this. Anyone evaluating sovereign collaboration tools should clarify three points: who controls updates and patches, which certifications are in place, and how long the switch will take in-house. The first two points can be checked via certificates and the software&#8217;s update path.
