In mathematics, a model is said to have proven the Local Smoothing Conjecture in every dimension. In theoretical computer science, it is said to have disproven the Exponential Time Hypothesis, ETH for short. In physics, the company reports existence proofs for four-dimensional quantum field theories, including quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of quarks and gluons.

Any one of these announcements would have been enough to keep a field busy for months. All core claims, however, come from OpenAI itself, and no independent confirmation is available. The model is not publicly accessible. Two questions are therefore worth a look: What would be gained if the proofs hold? And how does science check results that emerge faster than humans can read them?

What is the Exponential Time Hypothesis? The Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) is an assumption of theoretical computer science about the difficulty of the satisfiability problem for Boolean formulas (SAT). Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi posed it together with Francis Zane. Researchers rely on it for conditional hardness results in fields such as graph theory, bioinformatics, databases and algorithmic geometry.

What an existence proof says about nature

Physics reaches farthest. According to the Clay Mathematics Institute, quantum Yang-Mills theory forms the basis of most of the theory of elementary particles. Its predictions have been tested in many experimental laboratories. Its mathematical foundation nevertheless remains unclear to this day.

Physics has lived with this state of affairs for decades. Experimentally, the theory has been tested many times over. Whether it even exists as a consistent mathematical object, no one has so far been able to show. That is precisely what the reported existence proofs address: pure Yang-Mills theory, and theories in which gauge fields (the carriers of the forces) interact with fermions (the matter particles).

If the proof holds, a central part of the Standard Model stands on solid mathematical ground. It changes nothing about the measured values in the laboratories. The language in which physics describes the strong force would, however, be secured as mathematics and more than a successful computational procedure.

The biggest puzzle remains open for now. In addition to existence, the Clay Institute’s Millennium Problem calls for a proof of a mass gap. The particles of the theory have positive masses even though the classical waves propagate at the speed of light. Experiments and simulations show this property, and no one knows a proof. Whether OpenAI’s work touches the mass gap, the reports do not say.

A group around physics Nobel laureate David Gross, with Michael Douglas, Arthur Jaffe, Igor Klebanov and Nikita Nekrasov, is holding back the AI material for now and writing up the work itself. As long as the material stays under wraps, the physics result can hardly be judged from the outside.

Every dimension at once, one hypothesis fewer

Christopher Sogge formulated the Local Smoothing Conjecture in 1991. If the proof holds, the Kakeya conjecture follows in all dimensions, along with large parts of Elias Stein’s restriction conjecture.

Humans have worked their way forward dimension by dimension: Larry Guth, Hong Wang and Ruixiang Zhang proved Local Smoothing in two dimensions in 2019. Hong Wang and Joshua Zahl achieved the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions in 2025. The model now claims all dimensions at once.

The ETH is an assumption about how hard the satisfiability problem for Boolean formulas is, SAT for short: can the variables of a logical formula be set to true and false in a way that makes the whole formula true? Conditional hardness results in graph theory, bioinformatics, databases and algorithmic geometry rest on the hypothesis. The published manuscript describes an algorithm that counts the satisfying assignments of such formulas with fixed clause width in subexponential time. How much of this matters in practice is open. The first thing to be hit would be the framework with which computer science measures what counts as hard.

The result is being checked by the originators of the hypothesis. Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi of UC San Diego originally posed the ETH together with Francis Zane, and Ryan Williams of MIT stands at their side. The three write that their involvement is expressly not an endorsement. If the claim holds, it would change an important part of theoretical computer science.

Checking becomes the real work

The announcements do not come out of nowhere. On 8 September OpenAI reported that a model had solved the Navier-Stokes problem. On 6 October the company posted 722 manuscripts on 372 problems on GitHub.

One day later OpenAI withdrew three of them. A sign error had invalidated the argument of one manuscript, and with it the construction of two works building on it. According to the company, an internal review found the error. About half of the results had been published without confirmation.

Lean is an important tool in this situation: the computer rechecks every logical step of a proof. Whether the formal statement matches the intended problem is something the tool does not guarantee. That translation remains work for humans. They decide whether a verified proof is also the right one.

The mathematician Melissa Lee of Monash University writes in The Conversation that some of the accompanying papers remain hard even for experts to understand. Longer technical works sometimes take years in peer review.

Andrew Sutherland of MIT wants to see evidence for the claim that a single AI agent solved the problems with one prompt each. That remains unconfirmed until the model is public and others can retrace the results. He called the swift withdrawal of the flawed works responsible, but regaining trust, he said, would take considerably more. Daniel Litt of the University of Toronto, by contrast, sees no reason to withhold the answers to these questions.

Both stances describe the same shift. For a long time, finding a proof was the scarce part of research. Once machines deliver proofs in series, understanding becomes scarce: assessing, explaining, recognizing the consequences.

Who owns a discovery

OpenAI claims no academic credit. The credit is meant to go to the researchers who write the explanations. The ETH checkers still warn that recognition could go to those who publish first or own the strongest tools. Checking and explaining would then count for less. The checkers work unpaid and without a nondisclosure agreement; OpenAI has promised to release all raw data on the ETH result and to fund a specialist conference.

On 2 June, 16 researchers from 15 universities published the Leiden Declaration on AI and mathematics. It calls for norms on transparency, peer review, human responsibility and how to deal with industry.

Whether the proofs hold, the coming months will decide. One question is already on the table: a proof that a machine finds and a machine checks is a result. It becomes knowledge about the world only once someone can explain it.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Does the Yang-Mills result solve a Millennium Problem?

Not fully, as things stand.
